SUNY Orange Earth Day Events - Thursday, April 22, 2010

Earth Day 2010 was a great success! There were earth-friendly presentations, green information and awareness-raising activities at both campuses. Students enjoyed free snacks, helpful tips, and pledged to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Special thanks to Anna Rosen, Sandy Graff and Terree Angerame for providing the following reports of the day. Look for pictures to be posted soon!

Staying Green at SUNY Orange:  Earth Day 2010 - Anna Rosen

Students lined up for complimentary ice cream as they began their Earth Day celebration at SUNY Orange.

At “Pledge Central” students and faculty made the commitment to turn off the water while brushing their teeth. This pledge could also be taken at the Dental Hygiene Club’s table in exchange for a toothbrush. At “Pledge Central” many also pledged to use reusable bottles and to dispose of their trash properly. Students calculated their carbon footprint at an adjacent station.

Laurie Raskin, President of the Biology Club, provided t-shirts and tie-die along with the message that actions which support sustainability also promote a fun and healthy lifestyle.

A winner for the design of the sustainable bus stop was chosen, and the design will actually be used to create our new bus stop.

The local health food store, Pleasant Stone Farm, displayed healthy foods and cosmetics that are organic and green.

Metropool and the New York State Department of Transportation help commuters find rideshares. For those who want to bicycle to work, they provide maps and ideal routes for cyclists. They also gave out postcards printed on wildflower infused paper.

The SUNY Orange Educational Garden Project is, “A Collaborative project between the SUNY Orange Biology Department and Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener Program.” They are conducting an “Adopt a Plant” fundraiser to support their garden. The cost of adopting one plant is $10.

The Orange County Water Authority proposed a “conservation challenge” which includes showering for less than ten minutes, drinking water from a glass and not a disposable bottle, and simply picking up a piece of litter.

The following Earth Day activities were held on Thursday, April 22nd from 10am to 2pm on the Alumni Green in Middletown:

Newburgh Campus Earth Day Events

Terree Angerame

On Thursday, April 22, 2010, students followed the green footprints through the many activities that celebrated Earth Day on the Newburgh Campus.  Some members of the college community began their day by taking advantage of the e-waste collection site that was available for easy drop off in the main lobby.  From the main lobby the footprints led to the cafeteria where a variety of Earth Day activities were available to everyone.

Students learned about alternative methods of transportation, and many signed up for the NU Ride ride-share program.  Also featured were displays and information on green careers, e-waste, identity theft and Orange County environmental areas of interest.  Students had the opportunity to sign the Outside the Bottle Water Pledge to choose reusable bottles instead of disposable ones.  Another table featured Non GMO seeds and gardening information.  Many calculated their personal carbon footprint and learned about its importance.

Outside, overlooking the Hudson River, music powered by solar panels provided one example of an alternative source of energy.  Students from the drawing class practiced plein air (outdoors) drawing by sketching the landscape of the Newburgh waterfront.  Other classes did their part by collecting trash and recyclable material around the campus.  Ice cream, films, and a guest speaker on Zero Waste rounded out the day.

Earth Day at the Newburgh campus gave us the opportunity to recognize how we all can work together to make a difference.

The following Earth Day activities were held on Thursday, April 22nd from 11am to 2pm at the Newburgh campus:

  • 11:30am film: Food Inc.
  • 2:00pm speaker: Shabazz Jackson, “Zero Waste”
  • Green Careers
  • E-waste Collection (Drop off items in Tower Building Lobby near Security Desk)
  • Garbage Pick-Up
  • Blueberry Mountain Ice Cream
  • E-Waste Awareness and Identity Theft Prevention
  • Carbon Footprint Calculator
  • Alternative Transportation and Ride Share
  • Think Outside the (Plastic) Bottle Pledge
  • Safe Seeds
  • Solar Energy
  • Energy Cost Comparison
  • Plein Air Drawing
  • Master Gardener from Cornell Extension
