Computers in the Library
The libraries in Newburgh and Middletown have computers and wireless internet access for students and faculty. This page will describe the different features of each library to answer any questions. If there is a question that cannot be answered, speak to one of the library staff.
Middletown
Computers:
- 35 in the information commons
- 25 in the computer lab
- 7 laptop and 10 netbook computers are available for loan (see details below).
Saving your work
Save your work early and often. The best place to save your work is on your own portable flash drive*. All computers have USB ports in the front panel that accept USB memory devices. If you do not have one of these devices save your work to Thaw Space (AKA T: drive) not to the desktop or My Documents. Documents in these locations are deleted when the computer is turned off and re-started. Computers can unexpectedly be turned off or lose power. It is not possible to retrieve documents deleted after a restart. Nor is it possible to retrieve a document that was never saved. When you are finished with the document email it as an attachment to your favorite account.
Wireless:
The library is covered by two wireless networks. LRC is strongest on the first floor and Frontier is strongest on the second floor. Those wishing to use SUNY Orange’s electronic databases should use the LRC signal.
The library's laptops and netbooks automatically connect to the LRC signal.
Library staff will provide minimal support for your own personal portable computer. Library staff may be able to assist you to connect to the wireless network. In order to prevent making a problem worse library staff will not be able to work on your personal portable computer. Library staff will not loan out power cables for any personal devices.
Electric outlets:
The library has a shortage of electric outlets, if using your own laptop or one of the library’s please plan your battery power accordingly.
Printing:
Computers in the information commons and computer lab are connected to printers in various locations. To print from a portable computer e-mail the document to your e-mail account to print to one of the wired computers or save your document to a thumb drive. Please remember to conserve paper and print only those pages you need. Selected portable computers are able to print in the library. Be sure that you connect to the LRC signal to connect to a printer.
Software:
All computers are loaded with the full suite of Microsoft Office 2007 programs, Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, etc. For Nursing students Med Surge, and PDS Nursing Scenarios are installed on Pod 2, and the computers against the front window in the Information Commons. The NYC and State police manual and Penal, Criminal Procedure, Vehicle Traffic Law software are on the print station. A library staffer can show you where the software is located. Students are welcome to install their own software on the library's computer. Once the computer is shut off and restarted the software is erased.
Thaw Space:
Do not save documents on the library computers to My Documents or the Desktop. If the computer unexpectedly loses power it will restart and in the process will delete your documents. Save documents you are working on to T:ThawSpace.
Audio:
Library users wishing to listen to any audio must use ear buds or head phones.
