SUNY Orange Foundation Approves $250,000 Allocation to College

College community,

The SUNY Orange Foundation Board, at its Feb. 13 meeting, agreed to provide the College with a one-time allocation of $250,000 to help support upgrades to our instructional equipment resources. We are grateful to the Foundation for working with us to provide this one-time assistance.

While reviewing the many requests submitted to the PIP system throughout even the earliest stages of planning for the College’s 2017-18 budget, it quickly became evident that we have a glaring need to enhance our instructional equipment. This is also a message that we’ve heard repeatedly from Student Trustee Shane Laden, who has stressed the necessity for new equipment at every opportunity.

The need appeared so glaring that the administration decided to act quickly to see if the Foundation could be a source of support, thus allowing us to plan for such upgrades with some certainty while we continue to work on the remainder of the budget for 2017-18.

We realize that in the future we need to budget more reliably in order to maintain our instructional equipment at the level necessary to support the students of today. But, we also know it will take us far too long to reach that level through budgeting alone, particularly in the face of the enrollment and revenue challenges we are currently battling.

Through our ongoing budgeting and planning process for 2017-18, the PBIE Committee will solicit feedback from the campus community that will be important in prioritizing the allocation of funding for instructional equipment as well as for other strategic initiatives for the coming academic year.

I, along with the vice presidents, remain encouraged by the effectiveness of our newly implemented planning and budgeting cycle. The great work that department chairs and directors put forth in submitting budget needs into the PIP system continues to pay dividends as we prepare for fiscal 17-18, as well as consider how to smartly spend this new allocation provided by the Foundation.

I encourage you to take part in our budgeting forums today (RCSE 010, 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.) and tomorrow (Kaplan Hall Room 201, 2 to 3:15 p.m.).
