Application Now Available for Excelsior Scholarship

Yesterday (June 7), New York State’s Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) opened the application period for Governor Andrew Cuomo’s new tuition-free Excelsior Scholarship program available for New York State residents only, providing another option to help eligible SUNY Orange students fund their college education.

Interested students and their families can access information about the program, as well as the program application, at the HESC web site ( The application must be completed by July 21 in order for students to be considered for the scholarship during the 2017-18 academic year. Students are also required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available at

In order to apply for the Excelsior Scholarship students must: be residents of New York State, plan to attend a SUNY or CUNY two- or four-year degree program, complete 30 credits per year and make progress towards graduation, maintain good academic standing, and be on track to graduate on time with an associate’s degree in two years or a bachelor’s degree in four years

At SUNY Orange, admissions counselors are available to assist students from the time they apply to the College until they register for Fall semester classes, while financial aid representatives are working with prospective students to help them navigate the complex financial aid landscape. It is important to know that the Excelsior Scholarship will only be applied to that part of a student’s tuition bill that is not covered by other financial aid packages or scholarships earned by the student.

“We are doing all we can to help students understand how to enroll and pay for a SUNY Orange education, and we are letting them know that the Excelsior Scholarship is just one of the many aid options they can utilize,” says Maynard Schmidt, admissions and recruitment director. “There are many factors that come into play, and each student’s circumstances are different. We are encouraging students to examine all of their options, and for those who think they may qualify for the Excelsior Scholarship we are urging them to visit the HESC web site for the latest details.”
