Netowrk Upgrades Planned for Feb. 19 and 26

The ITS department has been working for the past two years to stabilize and improve the experience of using technology on the Middletown campus. It started with a major upgrade to the wireless access points in the Fall of 2016, has continued with the rollout of new fiber network from Bio-Tech to all of the buildings on campus in the Spring of 2017, and most recently, with the removal of the Novel client allowing us to use Active Directory for user authentication in the Fall of 2018.  We are continuing this work and in the coming weeks, we will be making some more major changes.  We wanted to make sure that everyone on campus knows about the work we are doing and how it might impact you.

On Monday Feb. 19, the SUNY Orange infrastructure team will be moving the Bio-Tech Building core servers to a new rack.  We will be doing the work from 4 to 7 a.m. so that we do not interrupt the normal work day.  Other than the network being interrupted briefly during the hours of 4 to 7 a.m., there should be no noticeable change once the work is complete.  We will continue to work in the early morning hours on the networking surrounding BT114.  This will affect mainly the ITS Department network connections as we move those to the new rack as well.

On Monday Feb. 26, we will begin further upgrades to the campus network backbone between the hours of 4 and 7 a.m.  The goal is to give maximum connectivity from every networking closet back to the campus core.  We are going to physically remove older network equipment and excess cabling that is not being utilized. We will then install newer and better-performing equipment to further improve network connectivity and stability across the campus.  Our tentative schedule is as follows:

Monday Feb. 26 – Bio-Tech Building

Tuesday Feb. 27 – Sheppard Student Center

Wednesday Feb. 28 - Orange Hall and Hudson Hall

Thursday March 1 - Library and Horton Horton

Monday March 5 – Harriman Hall and Morrison Hall

Tuesday March 6 - Rowley Center and Diana Center

We will send further updates if these dates change for any reason.

The changes on Feb. 26 have the possibility of impacting the network connectivity of your computer, printer and phone since we will be touching most of the connections. To be sure that there are no issues after the changes, at least one administrator will be on site in each of the buildings the day of the change, between 7 a.m. and Noon, to be sure that everyone is up and running as expected.  This will allow us to quickly respond to and resolve any issues that may arise as a result of the changes we are making.

Please let us know if you have any concerns or questions.
