Art Exhibit In Observation Of Sexual Assault Awareness Month

SUNY Orange is displaying this art exhibit on the 3rd floor of the Shepard Student Center in support of Orange County Rape Crisis, Merakey, and survivors of sexual violence. The exhibit will be on display this week (April 15-19).

The canvases displayed were created by the youth of Merakey. Merakey is a leading developmental, behavioral health, and education non-profit provider across the country. Merakey offers a continuum of care in behavioral health, integrating services in both community and site-based settings. Orange County Rape Crisis works with the youth at the Merakey Center for Hope, a youth drop-in center for children ages 11-21 residing in the City of Newburgh.

Orange County Rape Crisis holds workshops at the Center for Hope Site and engages youth in discussions around: healthy relationship building, consent, and types of abuse including sexual assault. Through the generosity of United Way, Orange County Rape Crisis provides the youth with supplies to create canvases inspired by their knowledge and experiences of sexual assault.

The kids wanted to depict how sexual assault victims are robbed of their identity, sense of self, and how they are left empty – therefore the faceless faces.”
