Conversations about Complexity and Contradiction: Creatively Exploring the Human Condition

Dates: 04/03/2017 (Mon): 2:00 pm
Category: Lectures/Workshops

To complement his "Simply Human" exhibit, Terry Murray, PhD, is presenting a master class in Kaplan Hall’s OCTC Great Room 101 which is directly across the Foyer area from the exhibit. Entitled “Conversations about Complexity and Contradiction: Creatively Exploring the Human Condition,” the class will offer participants the opportunity of reflectively expressing themselves through collage and assemblage. This hands-on program, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for Monday, April 3, 2017 starting at 2 p.m. Components for the collage artworks will be provided.

“I will ask students and community people in attendance to take the components and embellish them to express qualities, perhaps in contradiction, in humans (or themselves) through the figures they create. If they aren’t sure what they want to make, I will explain how to trust the process and to just begin assembling a human form and see what evolves,” states Murray.

Murray is an engaging person who will guide the class in using the expressive arts as a means of interactively involving participants in their own creative process. In addition to his exhibited sculptures, he will bring additional ‘humans’ for them to touch and hold. “Bringing the raw materials and demonstrating the process of creating a figure, plus sharing my motivation, will foster dialog among the attendees.”

Terry Murray holds a Master of Professional Studies from SUNY New Paltz and a PhD from SUNY Albany.  Since his retirement as an associate professor at SUNY New Paltz, he is an adjunct there in the Department of Educational Studies and Leadership.
